Filled with a very festive atmosphere, the University of La Salette celebrated its 17th year as a university on June 25, 2015. The first University Day was held in 1998 when the then La Salette College was granted university status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The University Day or U-Day is one of the biggest events in the university for it is the first gathering of the entire Salettinian community since the start of the new academic year.

The festivities began at 7:30 A.M. with the parade of colors spearheaded by Criminology students as part of the flag raising rite. The Museo de Pattaraday band played the National Anthem. After the singing, Fr. Franklin G. Picio, the University President, delivered his inspiring and enlightening Opening Address to the community at the terrace of the Miraculous Medal Building.

The Mass of the Holy Spirit followed after the President’s address. Fr. Pedro Q. Dolar, MS, the VP for Academics, Fr. Stevan G. Munar, MS, the VP for Spiritual and Student Services and Affairs, Fr. Danilo C. Galang, MS, the VP for Finance, Fr. Francis Tamani, MS, the chaplain of the High School Department concelebrated the Mass with the University President as the presider.  The Mass was attended by all employees who were in gala attire while the students in their prescribed school uniform. This Eucharistic celebration highlighted the need for God’s inspiration and guidance as the school embarks anew on its journey to provide accessible, integral, quality-assured, and transformative education to the youth of Cagayan Valley for SY 2015-2016.

After the Mass, the history of the institution was shown on the screen from the time the school was established in 1952 until it reached its 62 years of existence. The University President then formally introduced the members of the Administrative Board, the College Deans, and the Office Heads to the school community. He also led the induction of the newly elected Student Executive Council officers and the governors of the different colleges. The Salettinian Dance Troupe showcased their talents in pop dancing to entertain the community. The Museo de Pattaraday band also rendered an exhibition on stage as the colorful balloons designed by JB Baccay dropped from the ceiling to the delight of everyone.

A friendship basketball game took place between Northeastern College and University of La Salette players at the old gym after the program.  The ULS team won was headed by no less than the University President and the VP for Finance, who are both basketball enthusiasts. Mr. Arsenio Asuncion, the university’s sports coordinator and concurrently the PRISAA Region 02 treasurer, organized the said event to strengthen the camaraderie of the two schools.

A bulletin board contest was also held and participated by the different students clubs and organizations and offices. The La Salette Pananagutan Center won in the Office Category, the College of Arts and Sciences in the College Category, and the Alyansa ng Pangmadlang Komunikasyon bagged the award in the Student Club Category. Informativeness, creativity, and use of recycled office materials were the bases for the judging. An updated bulletin board would help new students get pertinent information about the operations of various offices and student organizations.

In the afternoon, the University celebrated the Panagtitignay 2015. This was a gathering of each college to develop the relationship between new and old students within the college. It was also an event where the newly elected college student council would be inducted by their respective college dean. Faculty members were introduced formally to the students and those who made it to the Dean’s List would receive recognition. Of course, the gathering was not complete without games and food! The school ground was filled with mini-fiesta celebrations where all colleges had their own festivity. Unfortunately, the late afternoon rain cut short the fun.

The organizer of the event was the Office of Spiritual and Student Services and Affairs headed by Fr. Stevan G. Munar, MS in collaboration with the Student Executive Council headed by Marielle del Rosario, the President. The continued support of the Administration and of the entire Salettinian community made the celebration meaningful and hugely successful.

Indeed, Panagtitignay 2015 was not only momentous but memorable to the hearts of everyone as the entire Salettinian community, guided by the vision, mission, and core values of the institution, looks forward to another fruitful school year!
